Sexual concerns are especially common amongst adolescents and young adults, especially those who identify themselves as members of the LGBT community. Doctors need to be open, empathetic and non-judgmental manner in their approach to interviewing, treating, and counselling these patients.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will comprehend how to conduct a focused history in a sensitive and empathetic manner for the patient presenting with sexual concerns. Specifically, the learner will be able to determine the patient’s feelings about their concerns, the influence their concern has on their life, and be able to conduct a non-judgmental sexual history. The learner will also be able to employ a physical examination and investigations, if necessary. Finally, participants will be able to carry out an appropriate management plan, specifically with regards to screening for STIs and counselling services.
