Hematology - Localized Edema

by Dr. Maja Artandi

Localized swelling of tissues is of serious concern to patients and physicians and must be evaluated appropriately. The list of aetiologies for localized interstitial fluid extravasation is extensive but a comprehensive and structured approach will help in developing a list of appropriate differential diagnoses. Deep venous thromboses, infection and malignancy must always be ruled out in a patient presenting with localized edema.

objectives

In this module on Localized Edema, Dr. Artandi will expertly present the causes, consequences and treatment of localized edema, and what you cannot afford to miss at first presentation. You will be able to recognize and interpret clinical finding suspicious for a DVT, risk stratify the patient and to assess for complications of a DVT such as a pulmonary embolus. Investigative tools such as a D-Dimer and Doppler Ultrasonography will be discussed, as well as their diagnostic usefulness. Finally, Dr. Artandi will teach you to develop a constructive management plan and to counsel the patient on therapy and important complications.
