Dr. Shaffer, currently a Professor of Medicine, was previously Division Head of Gastroenterology and then Head, Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary. He completed his MD degree at Queens University and Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology Fellowship at McGill University and then 3 years of GI research at Boston University. Dr. Shaffer later initiated a Royal College-accredited GI Residency Training Program at the University of Calgary, became its first Division Head of Gastroenterology and chaired the GI Research Group, which through active recruitment evolved into international recognition. His personal research activity has yielded over 500 academic papers, abstracts and edited texts. He has been an active educator serving as Program Director, Gastroenterology and chairing the undergraduate GI curriculum.

Dr. Shaffer was the first and founding President of Canadian Association for Study of the Liver 1985-1986, President, Canadian Association of Gastroenterology 1990-1991, President, Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation 1990-1992, Chair of the MAB Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation 1996-1998, President, Canadian Professors of Medicine (1998-1999) and a founding member and Chair, Finance Committee (1992-2007) the Alberta Society of Gastroenterology.  He has served on numerous local provincial and national committees for the AMA, AHFMR, CIHR/MRC, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and National Task Forces.

At an international level, he served on committees for the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association for the Study of the Liver Disease and the American Gastroenterological Association, chairing the Liver Biliary section for the American Gastroenterological Association and sitting on the AGA Council (2003 7) and the Organizing Committee (and as Chair, Public Relations Committee) for the World Congress of Gastroenterology in Montreal, held September 2005.
